Fatal Collision Claims Life in Moss Landing

Frank Penney • May 16, 2024

A tragic incident unfolded Wednesday morning in Moss Landing, as confirmed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), resulting in the loss of one individual's life.

At approximately 5:48 a.m., a red Honda Civic, driven by a 27-year-old man from Watsonville, was traveling eastward on Castroville Boulevard, preparing to execute a left turn onto northbound Elkhorn Road.

Simultaneously, a red Honda Forza Moped, operated by a 52-year-old man, was heading west on Castroville Boulevard, nearing the intersection with Elkhorn Road.

CHP reports that as the Civic driver initiated the left turn, it intersected with the direct path of the oncoming Moped, culminating in a devastating collision.

Tragically, the impact caused the Moped driver to be forcibly ejected from the vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries. The CHP confirmed that the Moped driver, identified as Michael Pacifico Carrillo of Prunedale by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Further investigations conducted by the CHP indicated that alcohol did not play a role in the crash, providing some clarity amidst the tragedy that unfolded on the roadways of Moss Landing that fateful morning.

Early Sunday morning , tragedy struck on the roads, leaving one person dead and two others fighting for their lives, according to the California Highway Patrol. Around 2:15 a.m., officers rushed to the scene near Avenal Cutoff Road, just south of 25th Avenue, following reports of a traffic collision. Details revealed a heart-wrenching scenario: a 23-year-old Fresno man, driving a 2024 blue Chevrolet Malibu, veered across the center divide line on Avenal Cutoff Road, colliding head-on with a white 2016 Ford F-150. The investigation disclosed that the Ford pickup, operated by 51-year-old Victor Soto, Jr. of Visalia, was traveling southbound on Avenal Cutoff Road when the tragic collision occurred. The impact was devastating. Soto, Jr. suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital by Skylife medical helicopter service. Tragically, the driver of the Malibu, whose identity has not been disclosed, succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene. The toll of the crash extended to 20-year-old Taeshon Ogan of Fresno, a passenger in the Malibu, who also sustained major injuries and was airlifted by a second Skylife helicopter to a different area hospital. As authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the collision, questions linger. What prompted the Malibu driver to cross the center divide remains unknown, as does whether drugs or alcohol played a role. Those with any information regarding this incident are urged to contact the Hanford-area CHP office at 559-582-0231. On a stretch of Interstate 5, tragedy struck as a woman’s journey took a devastating turn. The California Highway Patrol received distressing reports of a driver heading in the wrong direction along I-5, near Thornton, just past 4:40 p.m. Shortly thereafter, another call came in—a collision, head-on. According to Officer Angel Arseo, spokesperson for the CHP, the sequence of events unfolded as follows: A woman, behind the wheel of a Ford F-150, veered across the median from northbound I-5 onto the southbound lanes, colliding with a large rig. The force of impact propelled her vehicle into a direct collision with a maroon F-150. Tragically, the woman lost her life in the accident. However, the driver of the maroon F-150 sustained significant injuries, though thankfully not life-threatening. The driver of the big rig emerged with minor injuries. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, with investigations yet to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role. In the wake of this heartbreaking event, our thoughts go out to all those affected by the loss and injuries inflicted by this collision.
