Collision Claims Lives on California's 15 Freeway During Easter Weekend

Tragedy struck on the 15 Freeway near Baker over the Easter weekend, resulting in the loss of a woman and two children, while seven others sustained injuries in a devastating head-on collision, as confirmed by authorities.

The incident occurred around 1:40 p.m. on Saturday on the northbound 15 Freeway in the Halloran Springs area, just northeast of Baker, according to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The collision involved a southbound 2019 Kia SUV with six occupants and a northbound 2016 Mercedes-Benz SUV carrying four individuals, as detailed by CHP officials and records.

Authorities stated that the driver of the Kia lost control amid heavy rain conditions, leading to hydroplaning, as per a statement released by the CHP.

The Kia veered across all southbound lanes, traversed the center dirt median, and entered the northbound lanes, directly colliding with the Mercedes-Benz traveling in the opposite direction on Interstate 15, resulting in a head-on impact, according to CHP officers.

The speed of the Kia before the collision remains undetermined, officials added. Sadly, a woman and her 13-year-old son, passengers in the Kia, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, identified as residents of Madera. The woman killed in the tragic accident was identified as 43-year-old Alicia Ramos, with her son named Isaac. Additionally, a boy from Los Angeles, approximately 11 years old, who was a passenger in the Mercedes-Benz, also lost his life.

Several occupants, including a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old from the Kia, were hospitalized with severe injuries, while others suffered moderate injuries, including Alicia Ramos' husband and a 19-year-old passenger.

The surviving family members, including the Ramos children and their father, face a challenging road to recovery, both physically and emotionally, as stated by loved ones. Memorial fundraisers have been set up to support the devastated family in their time of need.

The tragic collision led to the closure of the northbound 15 Freeway for over two hours, with partial reopening before full clearance shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday. Witnesses or anyone with pertinent information are urged to contact the CHP's Barstow Office at (760) 255-5900.

An afternoon traffic stop on I-80 in Loomis, Placer County, took a dangerous turn when a California Highway Patrol vehicle was struck by another car. Stockton Man Killed in San Joaquin County Crash on Interstate 5

A 30-year-old man from Stockton died in a tragic crash Sunday evening in San Joaquin County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident happened just after 6:00 p.m. on Interstate 5, south of Downing Avenue. Authorities said the SUV the man was driving veered off the east shoulder of the highway, slammed into a metal guardrail, then tumbled down a dirt embankment before becoming fully submerged in a nearby slough. Emergency crews from the Stockton Fire Department responded quickly and managed to pull the vehicle to shore. Sadly, the man was found deceased in the water by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office dive team.
