Thursday afternoon saw a significant disruption on southbound Interstate 5 in southern Sacramento County, with traffic coming to a standstill due to a major injury involving a big rig crash, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The incident unfolded on southbound I-5 at Lambert Road, where one lane of the interstate is currently obstructed. Remarkably, the big rig involved in the crash found itself split between the freeway and a precarious perch—half on the road and the other half plunging off a bridge into a creek below.
According to CHP reports, the collision implicated three to four vehicles, prompting the closure of southbound I-5 at Hood Franklin Road. Although the highway eventually reopened before 11:30 p.m., the impact of the incident was palpable, with traffic congestion extending as far back as Elk Grove Boulevard, approximately six miles away from the crash site.
Emergency response units, including the Consumnes Fire Department and Walnut Grove Fire Department, swiftly mobilized to the scene. Additionally, tow trucks and Caltrans crews were dispatched to aid in the clearance efforts, highlighting the collaborative response aimed at restoring normalcy to the affected stretch of Interstate 5.
