Three Dead, Two Injured in Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 46 East

A tragic wrong-way crash on Highway 46 East near Shandon resulted in three fatalities and two serious injuries late Sunday night. The collision occurred just before 10:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Saundra Foutz, 30, from Paso Robles, was driving a 2021 Mercedes westbound in the eastbound lanes when she crashed head-on into a 2022 Honda. A second eastbound vehicle, a 2015 Honda, then collided with the wreckage of the first crash.

The driver and two passengers of the 2022 Honda were killed. Their names are being withheld pending notification of their families. They include a 24-year-old woman from Cutler, a 32-year-old woman from Sanger, and a 27-year-old man from Reedley.

Foutz and another occupant of the 2022 Honda, 28-year-old Carlos Quinonez from Orange Cove, were severely injured. Both were taken to local hospitals, with Foutz undergoing surgery in Fresno. The driver of the third vehicle, 38-year-old Jess Lopez from Bakersfield, suffered only minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

The CHP is investigating whether impairment played a role in the crash. While no alcohol was found in Foutz’s car, authorities are still examining the possibility of drug involvement. Foutz is currently recovering from surgery.
