Tragedy struck on Saturday morning in Sacramento County when a head-on collision claimed the lives of two individuals and left an adult and three children injured. Officials suspect alcohol played a role in the devastating crash, underscoring the dangers of impaired driving.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports of the collision at approximately 12:17 a.m. on Saturday, occurring at the intersection of Highway 160 and Sherman Island Road. CHP later provided clarification regarding the incident. A gray Nissan SUV, driven by a 26-year-old man from Antioch, was traveling southbound on Highway 160 at an undisclosed speed. Simultaneously, a silver Lexus SUV, occupied by a 33-year-old driver, a 29-year-old passenger, and three children, was traveling northbound on the same highway just south of Sherman Island Road. Among the passengers in the Lexus were a 2-month-old infant, a 10-year-old, and a 5-year-old.
In circumstances yet to be determined, the Nissan SUV veered into the northbound lane, resulting in a catastrophic head-on collision with the Lexus. Tragically, the driver of the Nissan, identified as John Malley by the Sacramento County Coroner, succumbed to his injuries. Jessica Hay, the 29-year-old passenger in the Lexus, also tragically lost her life.

The driver of the Lexus sustained major injuries and was transported to a Bay Area hospital for treatment. The 5-year-old girl and the 2-month-old infant, both passengers in the Lexus, were also hospitalized with significant injuries. Additionally, the 10-year-old child was taken to a Sacramento hospital for medical attention.
It was revealed that Hay was the mother of the three children in the Lexus, confirmed by her aunt Cynthia Padilla. The driver, Hay's boyfriend and the father of the 2-month-old, were reportedly returning to Rio Vista from the Bay Area at the time of the collision.
Following the crash, Highway 160 remained closed for approximately an hour to facilitate investigation by law enforcement officers. This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the devastating consequences of impaired behavior on our roads.
