A devastating crash on Sunday morning in Turlock, California, left four people dead and two critically injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The incident occurred around 9:25 a.m. on northbound Highway 165 near Greenway Avenue. A 22-year-old Modesto man, speeding in an Infiniti, collided with a Jeep SUV at a stop sign. The Jeep’s driver, a 44-year-old man, was crossing the intersection when the Infiniti broadsided the vehicle.
The driver of the Infiniti, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. Tragically, the Jeep’s driver, his front-seat passenger—a 45-year-old woman—and a 16-year-old girl in the backseat also lost their lives. Two other passengers in the Jeep, a 19-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, remain hospitalized in critical condition. All passengers in the Jeep were wearing seatbelts.
Among the victims was Jennifer Lourenco, a beloved teacher at Sinclear Elementary School in Ceres. The Ceres Unified School District confirmed her passing in a heartfelt statement, noting her exceptional dedication to her students and her recognition as Sinclear’s Teacher of the Year for 2023-24. Counseling services are being offered to help students and staff cope with the loss.
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as:
Daniel Lourenco, 44
Jennifer Lourenco, 45
Madelynn Lourenco, 16
Uriel Guizar Negrete, 22
Madelynn Lourenco was a student at Pitman High School, along with the injured 14-year-old boy. The Turlock Unified School District shared their condolences and announced that counseling and chaplain services are available to support the grieving community.
The Lourenco family was on their way to church at Our Lady of the Assumption when the crash occurred. The collision temporarily closed Highway 165 for several hours, but the roadway has since reopened. This heartbreaking incident has deeply impacted the Turlock and Ceres communities, leaving loved ones and friends mourning an unimaginable loss.
