A quiet morning on Highway 50 turned dangerous when a driver fixing tire chains was seriously injured by a speeding vehicle near Twin Bridges. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 54-year-old man had pulled his Nissan over to the shoulder on a curve east of Twin Bridges around 10 a.m. His wife and three children remained inside the vehicle as he worked on the left rear tire in the icy conditions.

As he crouched near the tire, an 18-year-old driver in a Subaru lost control while traveling between 45 and 55 mph on the slushy road. The Subaru slid into the Nissan, pinning the man between the two vehicles before tossing him into the air. The Nissan was forced up against the guardrail from the impact. At the time, chain controls were in effect, and the posted speed limit in the area was 25 mph.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the injured man was taken to the hospital with major injuries. His wife and 10-year-old son, who sustained minor injuries, were also transported for medical care. The Subaru had two teenage passengers, and CHP confirmed that all individuals involved remained at the scene until authorities arrived.

Despite the severity of the crash, officials stated that the Subaru driver was not arrested or cited. The accident led to the closure of eastbound Highway 50 near Twin Bridges for approximately an hour as crews worked to clear the scene.

A heartbreaking car accident in Auberry, California, left a mother dead and her 7-year-old son stranded overnight, waiting by her side for nearly 12 hours before help arrived. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the mother and her son were driving home to Tollhouse after visiting a friend when tragedy struck. She lost control of her Subaru Crosstrek while navigating Highway 168 near Qualls Prather Road, sending the vehicle careening down a steep embankment. “The vehicle traveled off the embankment and rolled over multiple times,” said one first responder. Both the mother and child were thrown from the car. Tragically, she did not survive, leaving her young son alone in the darkness. For hours, the boy stayed by his mother’s side until he eventually made his way up to the highway, where he was spotted the next morning. Authorities had already been searching for the mother and child after concerned loved ones reported they hadn’t arrived home. A "be on the lookout" alert was issued, and just before noon, someone spotted the boy walking along the highway. “We got a call of a child walking on the four-lane section of the 168, and the people who found him walked down to where the crash had happened,” said CHP Officer John Marsh. Investigators later discovered that the Subaru had plunged nearly 200 feet down the embankment, landing in a grove of trees where it was completely hidden from view. Authorities believe neither the mother nor the child had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. However, the boy told first responders that he had remained in his car seat. He was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital with several injuries, including a broken arm. Despite the devastating loss of his mother, first responders say the 7-year-old has shown incredible strength and is in good spirits. He has since been reunited with his father. The crash remains under investigation as officials await toxicology results to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role.
