Woman Killed in Alleged DUI Collision in Willowbrook California

Frank Penney • July 10, 2024

In a tragic incident early Saturday morning, a woman lost her life following a collision involving an alleged drunk driver in Willowbrook. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard.

Investigators report that Kimberly Dunne, a 32-year-old Los Angeles resident, was driving a 2012 Toyota southbound on Central Avenue at the time of the incident. Simultaneously, 22-year-old Brenda Mejia was a passenger in a 2012 Infiniti traveling northbound on the same road.

"The Infiniti attempted a left turn onto westbound El Segundo Boulevard, while the Toyota continued southbound through the intersection, resulting in a broadside collision," stated the CHP.

Tragically, Mejia was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Another passenger, identified as 20-year-old Sharlyn Vaca, sustained moderate injuries and was hospitalized.

Dunne, who allegedly caused the crash, was arrested at the scene and later hospitalized for her own injuries, described as moderate. Two additional juvenile passengers in Dunne's vehicle were also hospitalized with moderate and major injuries. Authorities suspect that alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the collision, according to the CHP statement.

Initially responding to the scene, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department investigators handed over the case to the CHP for further investigation. During the initial stages, sheriff's deputies assisted with crowd control. Meanwhile, the driver of the Infiniti fled the scene, leaving only a vague description as a male. Anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at (424) 551-4000.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the dangers of impaired driving and serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel.

A fatal crash on northbound Interstate 680 near Martinez took the life of a woman Monday morning when the vehicle she was in veered off the freeway. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 10:32 a.m. when a white Dodge Caravan unexpectedly left the roadway just before the Marina Vista off-ramp. The impact was devastating. The female passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The male driver, who suffered major injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities noted that neither occupant appeared to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage, causing significant traffic delays. By 11:50 a.m., three right-hand lanes remained closed, with no estimated time of reopening. By 1:20 p.m., only the far right lane was still blocked, and within 30 minutes, all lanes were back open. Despite the disruption on I-680, Marina Vista remained accessible for drivers seeking alternate routes into Martinez. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. A quiet morning on Highway 50 turned dangerous when a driver fixing tire chains was seriously injured by a speeding vehicle near Twin Bridges. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 54-year-old man had pulled his Nissan over to the shoulder on a curve east of Twin Bridges around 10 a.m. His wife and three children remained inside the vehicle as he worked on the left rear tire in the icy conditions. As he crouched near the tire, an 18-year-old driver in a Subaru lost control while traveling between 45 and 55 mph on the slushy road. The Subaru slid into the Nissan, pinning the man between the two vehicles before tossing him into the air. The Nissan was forced up against the guardrail from the impact. At the time, chain controls were in effect, and the posted speed limit in the area was 25 mph. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the injured man was taken to the hospital with major injuries. His wife and 10-year-old son, who sustained minor injuries, were also transported for medical care. The Subaru had two teenage passengers, and CHP confirmed that all individuals involved remained at the scene until authorities arrived. Despite the severity of the crash, officials stated that the Subaru driver was not arrested or cited. The accident led to the closure of eastbound Highway 50 near Twin Bridges for approximately an hour as crews worked to clear the scene.
