Teen Driver Arrested After Fatal Stolen Vehicle Pursuit in Elk Grove

In a tragic turn of events Monday night, a stolen vehicle pursuit in Sacramento ended in fatality, with Elk Grove Police Department confirming the arrest of a 13-year-old boy as the driver.

The incident unfolded around 9:18 p.m. on Highway 99 near Grant Line Road when Elk Grove police received a report about a stolen Toyota Sienna. Upon spotting the vehicle, driven by the teen, near Elk Grove Boulevard, officers initiated a stop. Sgt. Jason Jimenez highlighted, "The alert came when the reported stolen vehicle crossed one of our license plate reader cameras, which then alerted all of our officers that that car was now in our city."

Despite police attempts, the car refused to halt, prompting a pursuit. However, officers decided against pursuing the vehicle into a neighborhood, prioritizing public safety amidst evaluating traffic, weather, and the suspect's driving behavior.

Tragically, the chase came to a devastating end when the Sienna collided with a Nissan Rogue, driven by Gregg Umipeg, 55, at the intersection of Laguna and Franklin boulevards. The impact caused the Sienna to overturn, resulting in injuries to both drivers. Umipeg, after receiving medical aid, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The 13-year-old driver was subsequently apprehended and charged with evasion resulting in serious injury or death, a shocking revelation emphasized by Sgt. Jimenez: "The driver was a 13-year-old male and obviously that's alarming to us when you hear that news."

Following the collision, the affected road was closed for several hours as authorities investigated the scene before reopening it to traffic.

Driver in Critical Condition After Driving Off Overpass in Sacramento, California

A vehicle plunged off an overpass onto Interstate 5 in Sacramento’s Natomas area on Monday afternoon, leaving the driver in critical condition. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 12:52 p.m., near the offramp for West El Camino Avenue. The crash occurred while Kyman Jeung was driving northbound on I-5, heading home. He said the incident unfolded in what felt like slow motion, with the vehicle and debris falling onto the freeway just seconds ahead of him. Jeung had little time to react as he quickly maneuvered through the debris, including tree parts scattered across the road. Hours after the crash, locals noticed remnants of debris still on the overpass and in nearby tree branches. Sacramento Police confirmed the driver who fell from the overpass was the only person taken to the hospital. West El Camino Avenue was closed temporarily between Gateway Oaks Drive and Azevedo Drive while emergency crews worked at the scene. The road fully reopened around 3:15 p.m. Thankfully, no other drivers were injured, though Jeung expressed how fortunate he and others were that the vehicle didn’t land on them.
