Fatal I-80 Truck Crash Near Auburn: Driver Killed by Detached Trailer

A 57-year-old Colfax man, Michael Fiscus, was killed late on May 26, 2026, when a detached big-rig tank trailer crossed the median on Interstate 80 near Placer Hills Road and struck his pickup truck. According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck driver fled the scene on foot and is still being sought, making this both a fatal truck accident and an active hit-and-run investigation in Placer County.

What Happened on I-80 Near Clipper Gap?

The crash was reported around 11:15 p.m. on westbound I-80 just east of Placer Hills Road, near the community of Clipper Gap north of Auburn. CHP investigators say a Freightliner truck-tractor hauling a tank trailer full of water lost control and struck the center divider. The tank trailer separated from the truck, crossed into the eastbound lanes, and collided with a Ford F-150. Fiscus, the pickup driver, died in the crash. The CHP Auburn Area office has identified the big-rig driver as 60-year-old Stockton resident Robert Bell, who allegedly fled on foot and has not been located. The trucking company involved is cooperating with investigators.

Who Is Liable When a Commercial Truck Causes a Fatal Crash?

When a commercial truck causes a fatal collision, liability can extend beyond the driver to the trucking company, the cargo loader, and maintenance contractors. Large trucks are governed by strict federal Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules covering cargo securement, equipment inspection, and driver conduct — and a detached trailer often points to a securement or maintenance failure. In 2023, 5,472 people were killed in crashes involving large trucks nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Families facing this kind of loss should speak with a commercial truck accident attorney who can preserve evidence before it disappears.

Our thoughts are with Michael Fiscus's family and everyone affected by this tragedy on I-80. California Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information regarding Robert Bell’s whereabouts to contact the CHP Auburn Area office at (530) 401-9910.
